Alfie, a beautiful nine year old Spoodle, came to the Ark Vet Hospital one afternoon as he had been “off colour” for a week and was reluctant to move. Poor Alfie was not bright in himself and had been off his food, so we collected some blood and urine samples. We quickly determined Alfie was diabetic, and unfortunately was in the complicated stage of the disease where his body was starting to break down fatty tissue.
Alfie was admitted to hospital and hovered in a critical state for a few days. He received around the clock care throughout this time, however his outlook was grim as his frail body failed to respond to therapy. Finally, on Alfie’s fourth day in hospital, he rallied, as his blood electrolytes started to return to normal. By the fifth day Alfie was returning to a semblance of normality and once his appetite improved, his outlook brightened.
After seven days of hospitalisation, the heroic Alfie was able to return home with his owner. Now, a month after his illness was diagnosed, Alfie is jumping around and back loving his walks.
