Heroic Harry is a beautiful, 13 year old cat. Earlier this year, he came in for his annual health check and vaccination. Whilst he was generally in good health, we noticed that his teeth had a significant amount of plaque and tartar build up, and he was suffering from gingivitis. We advised Harry’s owner that the best course of action was a comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment. In short, this meant we would place Harry under a light anaesthetic while we cleaned his teeth and took radiographs to determine the condition of his teeth below the gum line.
Harry was admitted the next week for this procedure. Unfortunately, the radiographs determined that the majority of Harry’s teeth were undergoing resorption, meaning they were breaking down beneath the gum line. This condition occurs in around 50% of felines, and can be extremely painful. Due to the severity of the resorption, Harry required 14 extractions! Fortunately, we were able to save his upper and lower canines and incisors. Harry was understandably a bit sore for a few days following the procedure, but with the help of some pain relief and excellent TLC from his loving family, he has now made a full recovery!
Harry is now back living life to the fullest! He loves snuggling up on the couch at home and still manages to squeeze into boxes. He is still able to eat kibble and do all of the things he loved to do before the procedure, and he now has a pain-free, healthy mouth!
